Item Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.)(CABI Publishing, 2024-9-30) Temegne, Carine Nono; Gavilan Figari, Isabel Milagros; Tsoata, Esaïe; Agendia, Atabong Paul; Ngome, Francis AjebesoneLima bean is an orphan legume that is indigenous to South America. Despite its global distribution to hot regions and specific temperate locations, wild crop varieties have been found exclusively on the American continent. This study examines the origins, distribution patterns and botanical characteristics of lima bean to explore the potential influence of evolution on their geographic spread. Our focus relies on the study of plant gene pools, evolutionary relationships and classification systems. Additionally, we prioritize the collection, characterization, evaluation and conservation of germplasm. This analysis emphasizes the utilization of germplasm in plant improvement through conventional methodologies. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the integration of genomic and genetic resources for the purpose of enhancing crop improvement in lima bean. It also explores the utility of genomic tools in identifying introgression events. This study further looks at the reduction of genetic diversity in traditional areas and the constraints in utilizing germplasm to assess the potential disruption of evolutionary dynamics in ecological adaptability and the widespread utilization of cultivars. It is a clear imperative to prioritize the conservation of wild species and thoroughly document the genetic diversity they possess, particularly in relation to the comprehensive impact of introgressions on the whole genome and their significance for improvement programmes. Furthermore, recent advancements in the scientific understanding of plants, utilizing principles of genomics and agronomy, have resulted in significant modifications to production practices. Item Pulses: Genetic and Genomic Resources(CABI Publishing, 2024-09-30) Chandora, Rahul; Basavaraja, T.; Pratap, AdityaThe fight against global hunger demands a fresh perspective. Lesser-known legumes, often called 'potential pulses', can play a pivotal role. These underutilized powerhouses, including adzuki bean, bambara groundnut, faba bean, cowpea, grass pea and horse gram, among others, are currently untapped resources. Their potential goes beyond their ability to thrive in harsh environments (caused by high temperature, drought, etc.) and fix nitrogen. With increased understanding of these legumes and their genetic and genomic potential, we can unlock a new world of sustainable and nutritious food sources. This book explores: · The rich genetic diversity of potential pulses and its role in resilience. · How advanced genomics can identify traits for improved yields, pest resistance, and climate adaptation. · Strategies for conserving and utilizing these valuable genetic resources. · Breeding programmes harnessing genetic potential to create next-generation pulse varieties. Focusing on the untapped genetic and genomic potential of these legumes, this book empowers researchers, breeders, and policy makers to unlock a new era of food and nutritional security. By leveraging the power of their genes, we can transform underutilized pulses into the nutritional heroes of tomorrow.
