Abstract

The Dataset includes images of botanical samples and transverse sections of wood samples of 19 Peruvian species, as well as detailed information on the collections in which the samples above were obtained. The collections were carried out in Peru in 2020, in Huánuco, Loreto, and Ucayali regions. These collections were carried out within the framework of the project A wood species identification tool to aid in compliance and enforcement of Peruvian timber regulations funded by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the USAID Prime Award Number AID-0AA-A-11-00012, to generate a photographic database of transverse sections of wood samples belonging to Peruvian species, for identification in the field with the XyloTron system. To generate the database, trees of commercially important species were identified from which botanical samples were collected and wood slices were extracted from the basal, middle, and apical sections. The botanical samples were deposited and identified in nationally certified herbaria. The slices were sized until obtaining xylotheca-sized samples (2 cm x 10 cm x 15 cm), whose cross sections were sanded until the anatomical components were appreciated. Finally, the XyloTron system database was generated through images obtained from the cross sections of the sanded samples using the Xyloscope device.

Description

Photographic database of botanical samples: contains images of mounted and identified botanical samples of 19 Peruvian commercial species, which are in folders according to the place of origin. The files are in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) format. Photographic base of wood samples: contains cross-section images of wood samples of 19 Peruvian commercial species, which are in folders according to their species. The files are in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) format. List of wood samples: contains information on each slice collected, such as common name, scientific name, family, height level, codes of the collected wood slice, codes of the trees in the concession, herbarium where the botanical samples are stored, location of the trees in universal transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates and concession data.
